U.S. Census Bureau figures show the number of Americans ages 65 and up continues to climb as counts for younger cohorts fall. From 2020 to 2024, the 65-and-older group rose by 13%, while the number of people under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The country’s older adult population has increased significantly since 1920, growing from 4.9 million to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis forecasts nearly half of this older population, or close to 28 million people, will need long-term services and supports, with over a third potentially requiring nursing home care during their lives.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
