Storey County announces candidate filing periods for upcoming local and state elections

Storey County has announced the official filing periods for residents interested in running for office in the 2026 elections. Those wishing to seek judicial positions can file between January 5 and January 16, 2026. For all other offices, the filing window is from March 2 to March 13, 2026.

Candidates for federal and statewide positions such as U.S. Representative (District 2), Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Controller, Attorney General, First Judicial District Court Judge (Departments 1 and 2), State Senate (District 16), State Assembly (District 40), and Supreme Court Justice (Seats B and D) must file with the Nevada Secretary of State in Carson City.

Local candidates are required to file with the Storey County Clerk in Virginia City. Offices open for local election include Justice of the Peace for Virginia Township (to serve out the remainder of a current term through 2030), County Commissioner (District 2), Assessor, Clerk & Treasurer, District Attorney, Recorder, Sheriff—all four-year terms—as well as School Board Trustee seats (1-A and 2-B for four years; 1-C for a partial term through 2028) and Canyon GID Seats (2-A, 2-B, and 3-A for four years).

All filings must be completed in person at the Storey County Clerk’s Office. Applicants should bring a valid ID and proof of residence. Filing fees differ depending on the office sought and can be paid by cash or cashier’s/certified check.
