Watch for school zones and children

Zones

Carson City recently issued the following announcement.

School zones in Carson City will be in effect starting next week August 16th. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be working with Western Nevada Safe Routes to School (WN-SRTS) throughout the year reminding drivers and pedestrians to use caution while negotiating school zones.

Remember, ALL school zones in Carson City, when in operation, are 15 mph. Drivers are responsible to watch for the school zone speed signs and know the times the school zones are in effect, not all are the same, some are all day school zones and some are not. Watch for children and bicyclists. Parking on or within 20’ of a crosswalk and U-turns in an active school zone are traffic violations.

Western Nevada Safe Routes to School (WN-SRTS) wants to remind you that there are several ways to get your child to school. You can walk; ride a bike, scooter, or skateboard! If you live farther away, try parking closer to the school and walking in together. Take time to remind your child about how to walk safe and bike safe. Walk safe by always looking left, right, and then left again before crossing a street.

When riding your bike remember the 5 points of safety:

1. Protect your head- Wear a Helmet!

2. Be Visible

3. Use Bike-Friendly Routes

4. Be Predictable- Always let traffic know where your bicycle is headed.

5. Ride Defensively- Always make eye contact with drivers and assume that vehicles do not see you.

Have a fun and safe school year!
