Board of Commissioners Approve Dayton Storm Drainage Plans

Lyon

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners met Wednesday Night (June 29, 2022) in Dayton to address adopting two Drainage Master Plans in Dayton and selecting a location to build a second bridge over the Carson River in Dayton.

Damon McAlister and Chuck Reno of Farr West Engineering presented both Drainage Master Plans for consideration. The plans were a coordinated effort of the Carson Water Subconservancy District, Lyon County, and Storey County to address storm drainage in the Dayton Valley. The plans were broken down geographically by areas south of the Carson River and North of the Carson River. The planning project and final plans were paid for with FEMA funding of $3,000,000.00

The plans provide the County with a number of options to address storm drainage on both sides of the Carson River. Estimates range from $34.9 million to $44 million to implement the South Dayton Drainage Master Plan and $55 million to implement the North Dayton Storm Drainage Master Plan.

Residents questioned the phases of implementing the plan and how long it would take to begin construction. County Manager Jeff Page explained that approval of the plans would allow staff to seek funding to develop the project and determine the best options in the plans. Maintenance of the storm drainage system will also need to be addressed and financed. Page explained that staff can’t address any of those issues without the plans.

The Board approved both plans unanimously. Page advised the Board that staff would provide the Board with progress reports as projects were moving along.
