Yerington, Nevada – On Thursday, March 16, 2023, the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from Walker River Irrigation District General Manager Bert Bryan regarding current and forecasted conditions on the Walker River. Mr. Bryan reported the snow water equivalent is reaching similar levels as what the Walker River system experienced during the 2017 floods and has potential to exceed the 2017 levels with additional storms in the forecast for next week. Lyon County staff, including the Office of Emergency Management, are working closely with Walker River Irrigation District to mitigate potential flooding in Yerington, Mason, and Smith Valley.
County Manager Andrew Haskin provided an update on recent flooding events including providing the Board pictures of flooding and damages in the Dayton, Stagecoach, Yerington, Mason Valley, and Smith Valley areas. Lyon County staff are currently working to assess the public and private infrastructure damages in these communities. Mr. Haskin also announced Louis Cariola, Senior Planner has been appointed as the Lyon County Community Development Director.
The Board of Commissioners also:
- Approved an investment advisory agreement with Financial Main Street Advisors, LLC. Motion to approve the agreement was made by Commissioner Henderson and approved unanimously.
- Honored Eric Milavsky for his tenure as Lyon County Human Resources Director, including his outstanding performance and commitment to the employees of Lyon County.
- Approved a new compensation plan and amended salary ranges for Deputy District Attorneys to address the highly competitive workforce and recruitment challenges within the District Attorney’s Office.
- Appointed Ralph N. Ewing to the Planning Commission seat recently vacated by Commissioner Tammy Hendrix and appointed Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Commander Jeff Miller to the 911 Surcharge Committee.
