Western Nevada College recently issued the following announcement.

Learning from and associating with successful professionals can change the lives of Nevada System of Higher Education students on Saturday, Nov. 20.

NSHE students, including those attending Western Nevada College, are invited to participate in a free Fall Student Leadership Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The educational web conference will feature topics geared toward empowering women-identifying and non-binary students. Speakers representing all eight of NSHE’s institutions

will be represented in the conference.

NSHE Regent Amy Carvalho will deliver the welcoming address, followed by a keynote address from Nevada State College President DeRionne Pollard.

Students can choose from breakout sessions that interest them and join a student panel as well. Some of the topics students can choose from are First Generation Leadership for

Women, No Excuses Overcoming Obstacles, Crisis Leadership During A Pandemic, Y.O.U. Create And Develop Your Personal Brand, and Courageous Conversations Working

Smart In The New Normal.

WNC Fallon Campus Director Jessica Rowe, WNC Professor of Electronics and Industrial Technology Emily Howarth and WNC Adjunct Faculty Member Dr. Jennifer Verive will

provide their perspective, wisdom and experiences as featured speakers.

Other featured speakers participating in the summit are Truckee Meadows Community College President Karin Hilgersom; Brian Akins of College of Southern Nevada; Brian

Melendez of the Northern/Southern Paiute-Western Shoshone tribes; Amber Donnelli of Great Basin College; Dr. Claudia Cruz of University of Nevada, Reno; Dr. Jafeth Sanchez

of UNR; Dr. Blanca Rincón of UNLV; Sherrie Scaffidi of Transgender Allies Group; Sheena R. Harvey of UNR; Dr. Erika Abad of UNLV; Ericka Smith of UNLV; Jennifer Brown of

Great Basin College; Flora Rudacille of College of Southern Nevada; Gabrielle Amato-Bailey of College of Southern Nevada; Dr. Edith Fernandez of Nevada State College; Jane

Neitz-Singleton of UNLV; Jennifer Sprout of Great Basin College; Maria Sandra Jimenez of TMCC; Kristin Burgarello of Desert Research Institute; LaNelda Rolley of Nevada State

College; and Meaghan Lynch of Nevada State College.

WNC’s leadership summits have served as the forerunner for this NSHE-wide event. WNC Student Life created a women’s leadership summit in fall 2018, then combined its

women’s and men’s conferences for a unified summit in 2019. With the health pandemic preventing large, in-person gatherings in 2020, WNC Student Life presented a virtual

women’s leadership summit in fall 2020 and a men’s leadership summit in spring 2021. NSHE became part of the men’s summit last spring.
