Spend Friday and Saturday nights at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory learning about historical events and the mysteries of astronomy from Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas.
Thomas will lead talks on “The Trojan War” on Friday night, June 17 and a “Tour of the Universe” on Saturday night, June 18.
Both lectures are free and begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Facial coverings are optional.
In his Trojan War discussion, Thomas will lead attendees through “Homer’s Iliad,” focusing on a blend of mighty gods and mythical warriors. The presentation will also raise questions about what is fact and fiction from the Trojan War.
The following night, Thomas will provide a slide-show presentation that will take attendees from the Sun outward to distant known objects. His “Tour of the Universe” talk will include explanations of the latest theories about what is possibly out there.
When lectures aren’t presented on Saturday nights, the observatory is open to the public from dusk to 11 p.m. These Star Parties enable the Western Nevada Astronomical Society to bring together people with an interest in astronomy. The lectures and Star Parties are free and open to the public.
The observatory is located at 2699 Vanpatten Drive in Carson City.
