Of the 9,057 students attending schools in the county, 58.2% were white. Hispanic students were the second most represented ethnicity, making up 29.4% of the total enrollment.
In the previous school year, white students were also the most common group in Lyon County, representing 59.2% of the student body.
Lyon County School District has a main office in Yerington and is the only school district within Lyon County.
In the 2023-24 school year, total student enrollment in the county increased compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, chronic absenteeism has become a significant issue in Nevada since the pandemic. In the 2022-23 school year, the state reported that more than a third of students (34.9%) were chronically absent from classes, nearly double the rate from 2018-19 (18.8%). This mirrors a national trend, with estimates suggesting the number of chronically absent students in the U.S. has grown to over 16 million compared to pre-pandemic data.
Currently, Nevada has roughly one teacher for every 22 students, compared to the national average of one teacher for every 16 students.
